You will find Dumas, Texas just less than 50 miles north of Amarillo in the heart of the Texas panhandle. The town was named after the famous author Alexander Dumas, who wrote "The Count of Monte Cristo". The local folks are very intelligent, and well read; their school system has the highest grade point average of any in the state. Just to show your good taste, it would probably be a good idea to have a copy of one of the classics under your arm, during your visit in town. Just to let them know that you are also multi-lingual, you might want to carry a copy of Talkin’ Texan around with you also.

I’ve always enjoyed stopping there and staying overnight with my family. My wife and kids always look forward to visiting the local Braum’s ice cream parlor. They have about 50 different kinds of ice cream and they will make any one of them into a shake or malt for you. It’s always lots of fun deciding on which flavor of ice cream that we would like. Since we are only here for one night a year, we’ll usually have some ice cream at the store and get some more to take back and enjoy around the motel swimming pool.

In the late 1940s’ there was a very popular song called I’m a ding-dong daddy from Dumas. This song is still sung today at many of the family reunions and some of the local taverns. The song also inspired a very tasty snack cake by a large American bakery. You will receive a 30% discount when you sing I’m a ding-dong daddy from Dumas when purchasing this item at any of the local establishments. Some folks are too embarrassed to sing and prefer to wait until their senior-discount kicks in, or pay full price. It seems to me that if some folks have to sing for their supper, it would be more fun to sing for our just desserts.

I’m a ding-dong daddy from Dumas also inspired the ever-popular electric doorbells that many of us use today. Before ding-dong, there was just a knock on the door, or a steady buzz or ring. Seems that a Mister Moe Electric was singing along with this song one day and thought that this would be a great idea for a doorbell. A doorbell that went ding-dong so revolutionized the doorbell industry that Mister Electric was promoted to a General.
